Due to its vicinity to the border with Germany, Strasbourg’s culture and architecture are a blend of German and French traditions and the same applies to the food. I have listed some suggestions for you to get a taste of the Alsatian cuisine and enjoy the best food in Strasbourg:
- Choucroute, sauerkraut (fermented cabbage with a sour flavour) combined with different kinds of sausages, including frankfurters and smoked Morteau, as well as cuts of pork and potatoes. Head to Petit France to Maison des Tanneurs.
- Tarte flambée, bread dough rolled out, covered with fromage frais and topped with onion and lardons. However, endless options for toppings are available in many restaurants in the city centre. A great place to try this is La Binchstub.
- Cheese – Alsace is a great region for cheese. There are many gourmet shops and restaurants in Strasbourg. The most recommended is La Cloche a Fromage, this is both a shop and a restaurant, just a few minutes’ walking from the cathedral. Unfortunately, it is very hard to get a table there. Make sure to book in advance. If you don’t manage, then L’Épicier Grand Cru is a great plan B. We had an amazing cheese board (l’ initiation) and two really tasty fondues (Truffee and Savoyarde).
- Desserts – there are plenty of amazing patisseries in Strasbourg, serving lots of delicious sweets.
Wine & Beer
Alsace is also famous for its wine and beer production. You can enjoy the best food in Strasbourg with some delicious wine and beer.
- Wine: the most famous two are Gewürtztraminer, usually spicy and sweet and often paired with dessert or drunk as an aperitif, and Riesling, which is dry, complex and goes well with Alsatian classics like choucroute.
- Beer: the most popular brands are Fischer, Karlsbräu and Kronenbourg, but you should also try Meteor, an independent brewer.
