The Greek island of Nisyros lies in the Aegean Sea, between the islands of Kos and Tilos. Nisyros is one of the most beautiful islands in the Dodecanese and is very much untouched by tourism.
The island is a popular day trip from Kos and is famous for its volcano, which is dormant but still active, and for its beautiful picturesque little villages.
The Volcano of Nisyros
The volcano is 160,000 years old. The locals call the volcano Polyvotis. According to mythology, the island was created during the war between Gods and Titans. Poseidon chased the Titan Polyvotis down to Kos, ripped a chunk off the island and trapped Polyvotis deep beneath the rocks of Nisyros with it. Legend has it that his angered voice was the cause of the eruptions.
Stefanos is the largest crater. Here you can see the bubbling mud pools and steam geysers, and smell the sulphurous vapours. It’s a great place for pictures, as it totally looks like a lunar landscape!
Tip – the surface of the crater is quite hot so wear some hiking shoes, not flip-flops!
The Village of Mandraki
Mandraki is the capital of the island and the main port. With its beautiful cobblestoned streets and squares, it’s worth getting lost in its alleys to take some beautiful pictures. Make sure to stop for a meal or a coffee at one of the traditional Greek tavernas here, like To Kazanario or Irini.
Here you can visit the 14th century Knights Castle and the Monastery of Panagia Spiliani. The name means the Virgin of the cave. From up the hill where the castle is located you can enjoy great views over the island. There is also the archaeological site of Paleokastro, where you can admire the ruins of a 3000 year old Mycenean acropolis. Entrance to the site is free.
If you want to explore the island a bit more and visit the villages of Nikea, Pali and Emborios, I recommend an overnight stay.
Booking.comHow To Get To Nisyros
There are daily links from the ports of Kardamena and Kos Town. At least two boats leave for Nisyros every day. The trip takes about 1 hour and costs about €8, one way.
I recommend booking your trip with GetYourGuide as they offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure.
